VE Celebration: May Bank Holiday 2 - 4 May

Come and join us and travel back in time to near the end of World War II, this year we will be depicting the Battle of Varsity:

The date is 24th March 1945. Five and half years have passed since war was declared on Germany. British, American and Canadian forces have been working together to plan  what will be the largest airborne operation in history to be conducted on a single day and in one location. Known as Operation Varsity, British and American troops will fight side by side for the first and only time. This co-ordinated effort will form part of the larger Operation Plunder. The objective is to gain entry to Northern Germany across the Rhine River. We are now in the final stages of the Rhineland Offensive, 14,000 paratroopers will be dropped behind enemy lines to deepen the allied bridgehead and to knock out German artillery who are targeting the Rhine.

This battle scenario with pyrotechnic explosions and blank weapon firing will take place on both Sunday and Monday afternoon.

Along with this battle re-creation, there will be the chance to see two fantastic aerial displays with a Mustang on Sunday and a Spitfire on Monday.

On the ground over 350 Allied and German re-enactors will be available with their military equipment and displays for you to find out more about this defining era in history. Also don't miss out on our Victory in Europe Street Party celebration where you can hear and see songs and dance from the forties.

Children's activities will include our ever popular Science Shows with Professor Nitrate, Nerf gun tower, crazy carts and airsoft range, also do not forget to visit the armoury to see a unique collection of weapons covering examples from both World Wars.
